An attosecond is 1×10 −18 of a second (one quintillionth of a second). For context, an attosecond is to a second what a second is to about 31.71 billion years. The word "attosecond" is formed by the prefix atto and the unit second. Atto- was derived from the Danish word for eighteen ( atten ). Its symbol is as .

The motion of electrons on the atomic scale has been hidden from direct experimental access until recently. We review the revolution in technology that opened the door to real-time observation and time-domain control of atomic-scale electron dynamics, and address the expected implications of having the tools to monitor electrons with sub-atomic resolution in both space and time. The attosecond science group at the Stanford PULSE Institute focuses on dynamics on this timescale, which is a science frontier both for experiments and for quantum many-body theory. Ultrafast optical techniques are routinely used to interrogate chemical reactions on the timescale intrinsic to chemical change (i.e. the time scale for nuclear dynamics). Our attosecond research projects are done in collaboration with other groups in DESY, XFEL and Hamburg University. Attosecond Science Itatani, Jiro; Niikura, Hiromichi; Corkum, Paul B. Abstract. All aspects of attosecond technology rely on electron wavepackets formed by ionization and controlled by strong laser fields. This lecture was a part of 59th international scientific conference for students of physics and natural sciences "Open Readings 2016". Conference was organis N2 - Ultrafast science refers to physical events that happen on the femtosecond (1 fs=10^-15 s) and attosecond (1 as=10^-18 s) timescales. Generation of attosecond pulses is usually achieved by interacting high-intensity femtosecond pulses with matter (typically gases), in a process called high-order harmonic generation (HHG). Attosecond laser technology is expected to provide movies of the ultrafast quantum world of electrons in atoms, molecules and other materials.

The Lund Attoscience Symposium 2021 will offer monthly two-hour sessions on Wednesdays from 16.00 to 18.00. Each session focuses on one aspect of attosecond science and consists of one keynote lecture in addition to three progress reports from early career researchers. Attosecond science, a recently established research field that is overarching, relating the various traditional subjects (physics, chemistry, biology, material sciences, etc.), holds strong promise to this regard. Attosecond technology builds on, and contributes to, important historic directions in science.

Its symbol is as. Attosecond science offers formidable tools for the investigation of electronic processes at the heart of important physical processes in atomic, molecular and solid-state physics. In the last 15 years impressive advances have been obtained from both the experimental and theoretical points of view. Attosecond science works somewhat like sonar or 3-D laser mapping, but at a much smaller scale. When an attosecond light pulse passes through a material, the interaction with electrons in the More recently, in the attosecond science community, tunnelling time is implicitly assumed to be deterministic and, very often, is posited to be instantaneous or imaginary , , .

Ultrafast optical techniques are routinely used to interrogate chemical reactions on the timescale intrinsic to chemical change (i.e. the time scale for nuclear dynamics). Pushing the frontiers in attosecond quantum mechanics with increasing temporal and spatial resolution and often-limited theoretical models results in unexpected observations. At the same time, attosecond science continues to expand into more complex solid-state and molecular systems, where it starts to have impact beyond its traditional grounds.
